Gerunds and Infinitives
Gerunds and infinitives can substitute a noun in a sentence.
Gerund - the present participle (-ing) form of the verb, e.g., chanting, playing, moving.
Infinitive = to + the base form of the verb, e.g., to chant, to play, to move. Whether we practice a gerund or an infinitive depends on the main verb in the sentence.
- I require to have the results of the surgery soon. (Infinitive)
- I assume having the analysis completed finally. (Gerund)
Gerunds can be practised after several verbs, including enjoy, talk, dislike, end, mind, advise, support, manage, etc.
Infinitives can be practised after some verbs, including agree, ask, choose, help, plan, hope, learn, want, would like, promise, etc.
